How to Use a Protein Supplement for Maximum Benefit

In this article I will be expanding on my previous discussion of: When to Take Your Protein Supplement for Maximum Benefit. If you have not read it, go there now.

The purpose of this article is to go beyond when to use a protein supplement into how to best use your protein supplement. I will be basically dealing with the best way to administer your protein supplement.

Before I say anything, I will say this:

A protein supplement must be as easily digestible as possible.

I am not saying that this is the ultimate criteria for selecting a protein supplement. In fact, I think that the most important criteria is the protein source. But that is another discussion. What I want to talk to you about here is how to make your protein supplement be as easily digestible as possible. Let me diverge a bit first: the reason you want your protein supplement to be digested easily is twofold:

1) to minimize your body’s energy expenditure — digestion is a very energy consuming process for the body. Even though you use food for energy, you need energy to digest food and unlock the energy that is contained within it. This is why it is important for you to take all the steps you can to make you protein supplement be as easily digestible as possible.

2) to decrease the time it takes for the amino acids contained in the protein to be absorbed into your bloodstream and then delivered to your muscle cells and other tissues that require them.

!! I must confess that I have a bone to pick with people that advertise the use of so called slow release protein. Slow release protein is simply hard to digest protein. It taxes your body and delays the time it takes for amino acids to be released. They say that in this way you get a steady flow of amino acids. My question is: why would you want that? Wouldn’t you rather want the materials you use to build your house/muscle to get there sooner rather than later and all at once rather than as a steady flow. It just boggles my mind how people never stop to question this marketing hype. Marketer says: use this protein supplement because it is a slow release protein and it gives you a steady flow of amino acids and I say: why the hell would I want to do that, I want my digestive tract to be clear as fast as possible and be ready to receive MORE protein to digest and absorb amino acids from.

Let me get back on track here.
The next question is: how do you make your protein supplement be as easily digestible as possible?

Step 1:

First thing you do is select a protein source that is easily digestible for you. Don’t worry, I won’t leave you hanging and I will be directing you to an appropriate resource at the end of this article. For now it is enough to know that the most important thing to remember is this:

Select a protein supplement source that is easily digestible for you!

Step 2:

Mix your protein supplement with water. This allows your body to digest the protein more easily. It’s pretty simple really: the more stuff you combine in one meal, the harder it is to digest. Simplify your meals.

This also means by the way that your protein supplement should have the minimum amounts of carbs and fat in it. I am not gonna go into this as I have covered this stuff in two previous articles. This one deals with why your protein supplement shouldn’t have carbs: Best Protein Supplement for Gettin Shredded and this one deals with why your protein supplement shouldn’t have fats in it: Best Protein Supplement for Getting Shredded part 2.

Quick Tip:

I know that a lot of people try to make their protein supplement taste as best as possible — and they go to ridiculous lengths to do so. They actually poison themselves with toxic flavorings that make the stuff taste like cherry or strawberry.

BAD IDEA.

Hey man, if you really want to build muscle you are going to have to take care of your health. If all you do is give your body more work to do in detoxifying those compounds — just because you want to feel a little cherry on your tongue — I am affraid you have your priorities set unwisely.

Step 3

Use a digestive enzyme.

The reason you would want to use a digestive enzyme is twofold:

- your body will not be required to secrete those protein digesting enzymes itself — this will make the digestive process easier and less taxing;

- your body will digest the protein supplement faster, resulting in a quicker absorbtion of the amino acids contained within it.

Ok, so in this article I have discussed what to do to decrease the digestive strain on your system and ways to increase the efficiency of your digestive process and absorbtion. I highly recommend you check out this article: Protein Supplement – The Blueprint This it is THE MOST complete, accurate and truthful information on anything related to protein, protein sources, protein supplements and how to select and use the best protein supplement for your individual needs.
